In many respects, teaching now is harder than it was 15 years ago.
I taught Terrorism and Political Philosophy back in 2008 for the first time. My students had personal memories of terrorist attacks on American soil. But they were too young to remember the Cold War.
Nowadays, teaching International Relations and the War on Terror, it’s as if I was teaching the Cold War as I teach the War on Terror. They weren’t around to experience anything first hand from either one.
I’m using Robert G. Kaufman’s “In Defense of the Bush Doctrine” (Univ. Kentucky Press), as well as his later book on the Obama Doctrine. These books are a superb introduction to the War on Terror for college and university students.
The work continues.
